WHAT IS A POSTPARTUM DOULA?
Postpartum Doulas are professionally trained and certified caregivers that provide emotional and physical support to new mothers and families at a critical time. Doulas act as a guide, helping parents transition into their new roles by providing:
• Breastfeeding support
• Newborn education to help parents achieve a better understanding of their newborn’s needs
• Specialized help and care for preemies and multiples
• Sleep support
• Light housework
Did you know? Postpartum doulas successfully reduce the occurrence of postpartum depression, while facilitating successful breastfeeding and parent-infant bonding. Postpartum Doulas are a support to new families who have recently given birth or adopted.

Modern Doula Education’s Postpartum Doula Training and Certification Program provides you with everything you need to begin your career as a Postpartum Doula. The program includes an intensive five-evening workshop, one-on-one mentoring, and a certifying exam. Tuition covers the complete certification program with all class materials included.
Upon certification you’ll have the knowledge, skills and in-home experience needed to begin a successful and meaningful career as a doula!
Workshops are held locally, in the twin cities suburb of Bloomington, MN. We welcome local, national and international participants. Our student coordinator can help with logistics for those who are attending from outside the Mpls/St Paul area. We have trained postpartum doulas from around the United States and world-wide.
CLASS OVERVIEW AND OBJECTIVES
THE INSTRUCTORS
Tory Kielas-Jensen, BA, CPD, CLC, CPDT (MDE) – is a Certified Postpartum Doula and Lactation Counselor. She holds a BA in Business Communications and advanced certificates in Community Building. She has been training postpartum doulas since 2010. She also teaches families in home and group settings about the postpartum period for both mom and newborns. Tory was one of the original developers of the Modern Doula Education curriculum in 2012, and she purchased the business in 2018.
Alexia Franco Pettersen, BA, CFPM, ICCE, ICBD, CPD, CLC – is a certified childbirth educator, a certified birth and postpartum doula, and certified lactation counselor. She also holds a BA in Organizational Communications and Spanish from the University of Minnesota, plus is a certified food protection manager. Alexia has worked with more than 4,000 families in the Twin Cities either supporting them at their homes, their birthplaces or in the classroom setting since 2012. She resides in the West Metro with her husband, Russell, and four boys.
